HISTORY

This programme has been established through academic collaboration between the Faculty of Medicine, Srinakharinwirot University, and the Faculty of Medicine, the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom, since 1991. Initially, the partnership focused on the exchange of academic knowledge, joint research between faculty members of both institutions, and the development of medical faculty members at Srinakharinwirot University by supporting their postgraduate studies at the University of Nottingham. This collaboration led to the concept of developing the Bachelor of Medicine curriculum to achieve academic excellence, improve teaching efficiency, exchange knowledge, and transfer educational innovations from international institutions to Thailand’s medical education system.

Subsequently, the Faculty of Medicine, University of Nottingham, proposed a collaborative programme for the training of medical students under a joint initiative between the two institutions. A formal agreement to launch the programme was signed in 2002, and the first cohort of students was admitted in the academic year 2003. Under this agreement, the curriculum is delivered in two phases. During the first three years, students undertake pre-clinical studies at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Nottingham. Upon completion of the required coursework, they are awarded the Bachelor of Medical Sciences (BMedSci) degree from the University of Nottingham. They then return to the Faculty of Medicine, Srinakharinwirot University, for the remaining three years of clinical training alongside regular medical students and, upon successful completion, are awarded the Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from Srinakharinwirot University.

During their clinical training at the Faculty of Medicine, Srinakharinwirot University, teaching is primarily conducted at the HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Medical Center. Affiliated hospitals providing clinical training include the Panyananthaphikkhu Chonprathan Medical Center of Srinakharinwirot University, the Faculty of Medicine Vajira Hospital of Navamindradhiraj University, the Police General Hospital, Nopparat Rajathanee Hospital, Samut Prakan Hospital, as well as affiliated hospitals under the Ministry of Public Health in Ayutthaya and Nakhon Nayok provinces.

In addition, the programme continues to expand its cooperation by supporting medical faculty members to pursue postgraduate studies in specialised medical fields, thereby enabling the dissemination of new scientific knowledge and the ongoing development of the Faculty of Medicine, Srinakharinwirot University.
